Miscarriage Awareness Bracelet: Handmade Pura Vida Style Bracelets Tutorial

I am going to wrap up this miscarriage awareness week with a tutorial on how to make a pink and blue bracelet for the month of October. The Cooper Project does a beautiful job with the Pink and Blue Awareness Project so that is where to go first. If you are looking for a place where you can give back to a community of other loss families or somewhere that you’d like to help raise awareness, what they do each year is amazing. I have volunteered more than once to make bracelets and I have loved it. I take that time to pray over all of the people the bracelets will be going to.

There have been times however where I have wanted to make myself a bracelet to wear outside of October. A lot of people do wear their bracelets from the Pink and Blue Awareness Project all year long, but I wanted ones that I could take on and off. The first bracelet I made for myself was a beaded bracelet with pink and blue beads; I also added two hearts to represent our two babies in Heaven. For those bracelets you would need stretchy elastic and beads, all of which can be found at Joann's or Michael's. I will have to create a full tutorial on how I make and knot my stretch bracelets. But in this post I am going to focus on making a Pure Vida style pink and blue bracelet.

The supplies you will need are:

  • Wax string, make sure it’s wax and not cotton string. In the first photo I have some Hildie & Jo string that say’s it is wax but it was not waxy enough. I then went to Hobby Lobby and bought this brand which worked very well
  • Scissors
  • A lighter or candle
  • A ruller

Step 1: Cut out eight pieces of string that are 6” long. I used two of the light pink and two of the bright pink, then four of the blue. These will be the main part of your bracelet

Step 2: Cut your tails ends and the piece you will create your knot with. For the tail ends you want to cut out two 9-10” pieces of string. I chose light pink but you can select any color you like. Cut out a 7” piece of string that will be used for your knot closure, I used bright pink for mine.

Step 3: Take your eight pieces of string and line them up evening, then you want to take one of your 9” pieces and wrap that around one end, fold it so the eight strings are in the middle of that and then tie two knots around the end.

Step 4: Then trim the ends and use your lighter to burn them and tap on it so that they do not fray and the wax will secure that knot even more.

Step 5: Repeat step four on the other end of your eight strings.

Step 6: With your two tail ends that you have create you want to twist them around each other and tie a small knot at the end. You will notice that mine because untwisted and that is okay! I have had them stay on some bracelets and some not stay.

Step 7: You want to overlap your tail ends and then take your 7” piece of string to create your knot. You start with a normal knot then you will do a square knot.

Square Knot:

  • Start with holding your tail pieces straight and take one piece of your knot string to make a loop or it will sort of look like a lower case B with your knot string creating the hump of the B and your tail ends being the straight line
  • Then you want to take the other side of your knot string and pull it under the hump of your B and then behind your tail ends and back up through the knot string on the other side. Pull both ends of the knot tight.
  • Then repeat those steps but on the other side
  • Take one piece of the knot string and make a loop and this time it will look like a lower case D since we are working on the other side.
  • Take the other side of your knot string and place it under the original loop then behind the light pink tail ends and up the other side of your tail end and pull the strings tight.
  • Once you have created about 4-5 square knots you can tie a normal little knot at the end to make it extra secure. Then trim the left over string and use your lighter to burn the end.

I made this beautiful pink and blue bracelet that I can wear with my beaded bracelet and each can be taken off when I am doing dishes or when I am giving the kids a bath, or taking a shower myself! I have also made bracelets like this when I have a friend who is experiencing a loss and it’s a sweet way to show them that you are thinking of them. I always love praying over the mama and their sweet baby while I am making their bracelet too 💙

Blessings, Ellen
