Felt Christmas Trees and red embroidery floss

DIY Christmas Garland - Two Ways!

This may be hard to believe but we are just about two weeks away from Christmas! Somehow, once again, it has crept up on me and I am still having fun decorating our house. Granted some of that is due to the ovarian cyst I’ve been struggling with, but as happens with kids, life gets busy and we don’t do thinks as quickly as we’d always like. So regardless of having a decoration up for a few weeks or a whole month, I am still going to enjoy making them and finding a good spot in our home for it. This weeks blog posts will be all about the crafts we have been working on with step by step directions on how to do them yourself. One thing that is great about these garlands is they can really be adapted for any holiday!

Today I will be sharing two different ways to make Christmas garland and one of them is extremely kid friendly! Our six year old made this one almost all by herself.

felt cut into rectangles

  • Tie Christmas Garland

Now I believe that there’s a big store selling garland similar to this but honestly, it is SO easy to make and would be way more affordable to make yourself.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Felt sheets (in the colors you want) These ones from Amazon have a variety of colors
  • Scissors
  • Twine

Step 1: cut your felt sheets into long rectangles, I’d say about 1” wide. Then you fold the felt rectangle in half and cut it again at the halfway point. You are probably going to want to cut about 100 of these. The more felt pieces you cut the longer you can make your garland.

Step 2: tie your felt rectangles around your twin with a single knot. You can follow a pattern or add the colors randomly like we did!

Step 3: trim the ends of your felt pieces so they are similar lengths and cut your twine

Step 4: Find a cute place in your home to hang your new garland!

Materials You’ll Need

  • Green felt sheets, these ones on Amazon have a variety of greens in them
  • Brown felt or fabric scraps
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery floss - you can buy them individually at your local craft stores or this set here includes multiple colors!
  • Sewing machine and thread (or a hot glue gun)

Step 1: Use your green felt to cut triangles. Each tree will use two pieces of felt, so if you cut 10 triangles, you will get 5 trees. Cut out as many triangles as you’d like!

Step 2: Use your brown felt or fabric to cut out small rectangles, these will become the stump for your tree

Step 3: take your trees and stumps to your sewing machine and you want to sandwich a stump at the bottom of your tree. Then you will do a straight stitch around your entire tree. Your garland is almost ready!

Step 4: Thread your embroidery needle with the embroidery floss. You then want to sew your floss through the top of each tree to connect the trees to your embroidery floss.

Step 5: Find a cute place in your home for your new garland!

I hope you enjoyed making these garlands and if you made both, comment below which was your favorite. You can make a cute pastel tie garland for Easter or cut out felt hearts for a cute garland at Valentine’s Day. The options are endless so make sure to save this post for other holidays!

Blessings,

Ellen
