In Arizona, actual fall weather does not start until October so I may be a little late to the fall decorating game, but here I am sharing an easy tutorial for fall garland! Our kids love decorating for all of the holidays and a fun fact about me is that I am not a huge fan of Halloween. But since our kids always want to decorate I have told them that we can decorate for fall rather than Halloween. Last year I used my Cricut and sewing machine to make this cute fall garland so I thought it’d be fun to share these steps! You could do it without a Cricut and sewing machine but since I have them I like to use them.
The materials you will need for this project are:
- Felt (I purchase mine at Joann’s and chose all fall colors)
- Cricut or scissors if you are cutting them by hand
- Design Space - this is the app you use with your Cricut and I searched for “fall leaves” in the images. If you are cutting the leaves by hand you would want to find your favorite leaf stencil or cut out to trace.
- Cricut standard grip or strong grip mat
- Cricut Maker and rotary blade
- Sewing machine
- Twine (if you are not using a sewing machine)
- Hot Glue Gun or fabric glue
- The first step is finding your favorite leaf pattern! I found mine in Design space and there are many to chose from, but I liked the simple design of these
- I duplicated the three I liked in Design Space and then arranged them on the mat so that they could cut out the most at one time with the size felt I have
- Cut out the project on your machine unit you have the amount of leaves you want
- Take your leaves to your sewing machine
- Pull out some thread so that you have a tail to begin with then start sewing your leaves, you can create a pattern or grab at random but you want to sew with a straight stitch along the center of your leaf and when you get to the end stop your machine and lift the foot to feed the next leaf
- Sew your straight stitch along the center of the second leaf and stop the machine when you get to the end, lift your presser foot and place your next leaf. You keep sewing along the center of the leaf and feeding them one by one until you’ve done all of your leaves! You won’t be cutting any threads until the very end and you will start to see a beautiful garland coming together
- If you are not using a sewing machine, you will want to cut out twice as many leaves
- Cut out a long piece of twine a bit longer than the length of garland you’d like to make
- Take one leaf and hot glue gun the back, then place it on the twine and line up the same leaf to glue them together.
- Repeat this step until you have a beautiful fall leaf garland!
