A Day in the Life of a SAHM and Creator

I have never done “a day in the life” but always enjoyed seeing other’s days (whether they are sharing on social media or writing a blog post). As a younger mom, I used to read so many blogs about how other mom’s would structure their days and what schedules they follow. We are about a month into our school year, I have had quite a few sewing projects going on and been writing for my own blog for a few months now and I feel like we are into a good rhythm. So I am going to share what a day looks like for us! Mind you, this is a normal day where we don’t have any appointments and I do not have Bible Study. We have an 8 year old son who is in second grade, a 6 year old daughter in first grade and the twins just turned 4 (they stay home with me).

5:15 - my watch alarm goes off and I am usually out of bed by 5:30. Every other day I go on a 30 minute walk and the days that I do not walk, I go downstairs to journal prayers and Bible study.

6:15 - Jack and Eva have an alarm clock that goes off at this time and if the twins are not already awake the alarm wakes them up as well. The older kids brush their teeth and get dressed before coming down stairs. Usually all of the kids are downstairs by 6:30-6:40

6:30(ish) - we all sit at the table and do Bible Club. I will likely share a whole post on what we do for Bible club but typically the kids have a coloring sheet to occupy them until everyone is ready to start. This is the book we use for our Bible Club and all of us have loved doing this.

6:45 - breakfast (our most common breakfasts are overnight oats, cereal or toast with fruit.

7:05 - the older kids get their shoes on and backpacks/water bottles ready to go

7:15 - we say our daily family blessing and my husband takes the kids to school. After they leave I usually clean up from breakfast and sit down to drink my coffee. If it is a morning that I went on a walk I will usually catch up on my prayer journaling and Bible reading at this time too.

8-9:30 - the twins play and I do things around the house like laundry, sweeping, cleaning up.

9:30 - morning snack, which is usually fruit or meat and cheese

10:00 - 11:30 - I typically sew between these hours. My husband works from home and often has meetings so it is during those times that the twins will get some screen time and I get sewing/writing done.

12:00 - lunch and play time

12:45 - morning clean up of toys and straightening the living room up

1:00 - 2:00 - quiet time. The twins no longer nap so they play together in their room. It is supposed to be quiet play but that is an area I have needed to be graceful about. I have found that it helps when I am laying down as well, if they can hear me downstairs or moving about upstairs they often come out to see what is going on. Sometimes I will use this as time to write but often I try to get rest myself.

2:00 - afternoon snack

3:00 - school pickup

4:00 - after school snack and homework for Jack and Eva

5:30 - dinner and clean up

6:15 - this time of day will vary. Lately it’s been cooling off in the evenings so we will go outside for a little bit. Some evenings it will be the time that one of the kids takes a shower or bath. Sometimes this will be the kids watching a show, each day is a little different depending on how hectic of a day it’s been or what we have going on.

6:45 - the kids put on PJs and the twins brush teeth. This is their bedtime so either myself or my husband will take them to their room and read them a story then give them their bedtime blessing. This is the time when we have Jack and Eva help with dinner clean up; one of them rinses the dishes for the dishwasher and the other wipes down the counter tops. They then make their lunches for the next day.

7:30 - Jack and Eva brush their teeth and then are allowed to read in bed until 8:00 when it’s lights out for them. This is also the time that we do their evening blessings.

8:00-9:00 - my husband and I hang out until we go to bed. We feel much better when we go to bed on the earlier side and get good rest before another day!

I hope this day in the life helped you, sometimes it feels like we are always searching for healthy rhythms and I think that can be due to the amount of people in our family. We have four young kids and their needs in a day change. As a mom, I have struggled with worrying if I am doing something wrong because a rhythm that has been working will suddenly stop working. It is important to remember that change doesn’t mean we have done something wrong. The needs of a family will ebb and flow and being able to pivot to better serve our family means that we are growing as well. We are gaining new tools and skills to be the best mom’s we know how. I have found that planting myself in scripture and surrounding myself with godly women creates the best support as I face challenges or changes. I pray that you have the same in your life.

Blessings, Ellen
